7th Annual Instructional Leadership Institute

The YouthBuild USA Education Department is thrilled to announce its 7th Annual Instructional Leadership Institute taking place in Boston, MA August 6-8, 2012!

The Institute is designed to support the learning goals and objectives of instructional leaders and classroom practitioners across the YB network. The Institute will highlight effective and promising instructional leadership practices that are being implemented by YouthBuild schools across the country and by external experts and practitioners achieving impressive student learning results in other alternative high schools and community based organizations.

Principals, Instructional Leaders, and Teachers are all invited to attend this robust gathering.

2012 Institute Focus

Monday, August 6th
• Improving Student Motivation and Engagement through Questioning and Critical Thinking: Mockingbird Education will present powerful questioning techniques for increasing student engagement and improving learning outcomes.

Tuesday, August 7th
AM Sessions:
• Responding to Common Core Standards: YouthBuild Columbus instructional leaders will present how they are responding to common core standards and share their processes for integrating these standards into their curriculum.
• Preparing for the New GED: In 2014, the GED will be re-launched with considerable changes to the content and processes associated with the test. External partners leading the remake of the test will share changes and help programs think about how to adapt teaching and program practices to prepare students for success on the new version of the GED.

PM Sessions:
• Improving Literacy Instruction: Effective literacy instructional practices are critical for the success of every class and every program component at YouthBuild. Implementation of quality literacy practices and the relationship of those practices to common core standards will be shared and considered.
• Improving Numeracy Instruction: Building foundational numeracy skills is essential for improving student achievement and promoting college & career readiness. This session will focus on effective classroom strategies for helping students succeed in learning math.

Wednesday, August 8th
• Integrating Technology into the Classroom: This session will review new tech-based instructional resources/tools. Participants will collectively explore strategies for effectively integrating these technology tools in the YouthBuild setting.

**NSI and PSE sites may use grant funds to pay for travel and lodging to this gathering. YouthBuild programs not currently funded in either of these initiatives will be responsible for covering all of their travel and lodging costs associated with this gathering. Materials, breakfast and lunch will be provided at no additional cost throughout this event.
